The focus of this Blog is my opinion and observations about the Cleveland Browns and University of Florida Gators performance, the NFL, SEC and sports in general. Sports history and current sports operations including political and social impact on society. Reader's of my book "They Call It A Game" tell me, without exception that it changed their thinking about the NFL and is as relevent today as ever. Saying they enjoyed reading it is a great bonus.

Dissappointing Dull Playoff Games

The Steelers and the Seahawks won so easily the games were not even competitive. How can there be that much difference between the final four teams? Carolina and Denver played like they were in a stupor. I turned both games off at the beginning of the fourth quarter. I hope other people didn't find the games a dull as I did. The games left me with the feeling that the Super Bowl will probably be a blow out too but I have no idea which team might win.

Janet Jackson's breast baring Super Bowl performance was the topic of much testimony at the US Senate Decency on Television Hearings last week. Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska is the Chairman and is concerned about the vulagar content of what is shown on TV. I was surprised at how many times the NFL and ESPN were cited. He and committee members are concerned about the near porn content of many TV shows that children have access to. I emailed him that to say that I think Gangster Rap and the seeming NFL-ESPN endorsement of it is a much more serious threat to the youth of America than anything else on television today.

The Musical Chairs shuffle within the coaches fraternity that has just occurred doesn't look like it will exactly upset any balance of power within "the league."

Browns Bounced Back Again from Embarrassment

Beating the Ravens was an important way to end the season. Charlie Frye's success is the most positive result of the 2005 season. Coach Crennell can hardly say he should have used Frye from early on in the season. But he should have Frye for 75% of the season. Of course it may not have been his decision.

I have no inside knowledge whatever about the John Collins-Phil Savage feud. Had no idea it was going on. But having Randy Lerner carrying out his own club president's role, uninsulated and involved rivals Frye's emergence as 2005's most important positive result. Provided Randy really wants to be in the action.

It would seem that some one is responsible for trading and entire defensive line to Denver where they utilized those four former Browns so much better than the Browns coaches utilized them that Denver is now a game away from being in the 2006 Super Bowl. Anyone with a brain has to wonder who traded them to Denver? If those four young men were trying to show the Browns management Collins or Savage that they made a mistake evaluating and trading them "they have done a Heck-of-a job, Brownie" to use one of our President's more famous expressions.

Trent Dilfer's early season successes held Frye and the Browns long term progress back by half a season. I congratulate Trent for his successes and there are more mature teams further along the way to a Super Bowl who could use his considerable back-up talents and so can the Browns in 2006.

Watching the Steelers v Colts game the referees blew the call on Palamalou's interception. The review looked clearly like the Steelers star safety had control of the ball then lost it momentarily trying to roll over and up to run with it. Changed the entire game. This is the second game changing blown referees call in the play-offs.

Pittsburgh's defensive coach Dick Lebeau is the best coach in the NFL. Dick's defensive strategy is what embarrassed the Browns 41-0. He should be head coach if he wants a head coaches job. The late Coach Paul Brown gave his players including Lebeau IQ tests. Paul said Dick was one of the 3 top IQ scores in 1959. Center Art Hunter from Notre Dame had a genius IQ and Hunter ranked 3rd on that 1959 Browns IQ test. Most genius types are not good football stategist Lebeau is a very bright guy and a terrific football strategist. The Browns should hire Lebeau as and assistant head coach before some other team hires him as a head coach. It would also help the Browns for Dick to be somewhere other than Pittsburgh.

If the Browns don't want him I'd like to see Dick in St Louis with a healthy team.
